The food we eat plays an essential role in our life. It provides the energy for our body to function, and the nutrients that we consume impacts our overall health. In order to maintain a healthy diet, we need to have adequate knowledge about the components of food and the proportions in which they should be included in our daily intake.
Components of Food

The components of food are broadly classified into six categories - Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water. Each component plays a critical role in maintaining the balance of our body - physically and mentally.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for our body. They are essential for maintaining an active lifestyle and supporting our immuno-defenses. They can be classified into two types - Simple Carbohydrates (found in sugar, honey, etc.) and Complex Carbohydrates (found in fruits, vegetables, rice, etc.).
Proteins: Proteins are essential for the growth and repair of tissues in our body. They are also needed to produce vital hormones and enzymes, which control various biochemical reactions. Proteins are available in both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items like pulses, eggs, chicken, tofu, etc.
Fats: Fats are an important energy source and are vital for healthy skin and hair. They also provide insulation and protection for our vital organs. However, consuming too much fat can lead to health problems, like high blood pressure and cholesterol. Fats can be classified into two categories - Saturated Fats (found in animal products) and Unsaturated Fats (found in nuts, fish, etc.)
Vitamins: Vitamins are essential for maintaining a healthy body. They help in various bodily functions, like building immunity, producing red blood cells, etc. There are 13 essential vitamins that our body requires, and these can be acquired through fruits, vegetables, milk, etc.
Minerals: Minerals are vital in maintaining an overall healthy body. There are two types of minerals - Macrominerals (required in large quantities: like calcium, sodium, potassium, etc.) and Microminerals (required in small quantities: like iron, zinc, selenium, etc.). Green leafy vegetables, milk, meat, etc. are sources of minerals.
Water: Water is one of the most critical components of our body. It helps in regulating our body temperature, eliminating waste products, and maintaining the balance of electrolytes. It is essential to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
